The frequently cited 2003 Mount Mulanje “war against aliens” story illustrates this problem. Researchers can verify that the article existed because it was indexed elsewhere, yet the complete newspaper report is not consistently accessible, making it impossible to establish exactly what witnesses claimed or whether the headline reflected literal reporting, local folklore, sensational journalism or another context altogether.
This is an archival failure rather than necessarily an evidential one: a reported incident survives, but much of the information needed to evaluate it has effectively been lost.
Why Official Records Contribute Little
Another reason Malawi’s archive appears so sparse is the absence of publicly accessible government UFO files.
Unlike countries that have released military or intelligence records relating to unidentified aerial phenomena, Malawi has no known publicly available archive of defence, aviation or police investigations devoted to UFO reports. The Role of UFO Afrinews

Its importance lies less in documenting numerous Malawi cases than in demonstrating the reporting environment in which Malawi existed.

A common misunderstanding is that Malawi’s limited archive proves that unusual aerial phenomena never occurred there.
The evidence does not support that conclusion.
Instead, the available record suggests that several barriers reduced the likelihood that observations would become permanent historical cases:
- rural sightings may never have reached newspapers;
- local newspapers often lacked specialist science or investigative reporting;
- witnesses may have interpreted unusual events through religious, cultural or environmental frameworks rather than using the language of “UFOs”;
- isolated reports frequently remained local stories instead of entering international catalogues.
These mechanisms create what historians call a documentation bias: events that are never formally recorded cannot later appear in searchable archives, regardless of whether they actually occurred.
This helps explain why neighbouring countries with stronger investigation networks appear to have richer UFO histories even though the true difference in reporting frequency may have been much smaller.
What a National Archive Would Need
Creating a more reliable historical record for Malawi would require improving documentation rather than searching for a hidden cache of files.
A useful national archive would ideally include:
- digitised regional newspapers from the post-independence period onward;
- searchable police, aviation and meteorological records where legally accessible;
- preserved witness testimony with dates, locations and interview notes;
- photographs or physical evidence linked to documented provenance;
- consistent classification separating confirmed observations, unexplained reports, misidentifications and folklore;
- cross-referencing with astronomical events, satellite passes and atmospheric phenomena to evaluate conventional explanations.
Such an archive would allow researchers to distinguish genuine unknowns from ordinary misidentifications while also revealing whether Malawi’s apparent scarcity reflects reality or decades of incomplete preservation.
The Archive Gap Matters More Than the Case Count
The defining feature of Malawi’s UFO history is not an abundance of extraordinary reports but an unusually fragmented documentary record. Most identifiable cases survive only as isolated references rather than complete investigative files, and no central institution has assembled them into a coherent national chronology.
For historians and researchers, this means that the principal challenge is archival reconstruction.
