Introduction

Ordinary aerial sources are also more common around the capital
The coastal concentration also increases exposure to ordinary objects that are frequently mistaken for something extraordinary.

The role of investigators in shaping the visible map
The existence of a reporting organisation can itself create apparent hotspots.
Between roughly 2009 and 2015, MUST actively encouraged Surinamese witnesses to submit reports. Publicity surrounding the organisation generated additional awareness, making residents more likely to recognise an unusual observation as something worth reporting.

Some of Suriname’s better-known incidents—including the widely discussed October 2001 Paramaribo observation—remain unresolved because key evidence is missing rather than because investigators established extraordinary characteristics.
This distinction matters.
An unresolved case from Paramaribo benefits from:
- multiple witnesses;
- newspaper attention;
- institutional awareness;
- partial historical documentation.
A hypothetical sighting from the interior might possess none of these advantages, even if the underlying event were equally unusual. Conversely, greater publicity around the capital also increases the likelihood that ordinary events receive sustained attention simply because more people witnessed them.
Therefore, comparisons between coastal and interior reports should avoid assuming equal reporting conditions.
