Two cases account for nearly all of Kiribati’s visible online UFO footprint:
- An alleged fast-moving white light seen on Tabiteuea on 10 July 2019.
- A supposed crashed saucer visible in Google Earth imagery of uninhabited Starbuck Island.
They are very different kinds of claim. The Tabiteuea case is an eyewitness narrative with no photograph or instrument record. The Starbuck Island story began with an image whose physical subject was already present on the ground and could be compared with historical and expedition evidence.
The 2019 Tabiteuea light
The clearest first-person account was posted anonymously to Reddit in March 2020. The writer said that they and a companion were walking at night on Tabiteuea when the companion noticed a white ball crossing the sky. About 30 seconds later, the writer reported seeing what appeared initially to be a stationary star before it accelerated and made sharp, curved movements. The event was dated to 10 July 2019. The account has some features that make it more useful than a one-line database entry. It identifies an island and date, describes the observing conditions, names a second apparent witness and records the observers’ attempts to exclude aircraft, birds, meteors and satellites. Those strengths do not make it a confirmed anomaly. Several important quantities were inferred rather than measured. A point of light cannot reliably reveal its altitude, physical speed or distance without reference objects or triangulation. An object perceived as “high in the atmosphere” could instead have been a much nearer light. Apparent bends or sudden accelerations can also be produced by observer movement, broken cloud, loss and reacquisition of a light source, or the autokinetic effect, in which an isolated light against a dark background seems to move.

Why Starbuck Island was mistaken for a crash site
The best-known Kiribati UFO story concerns a feature in satellite imagery of Starbuck Island. Social-media posts and news stories described it as a saucer that had skidded across the island before coming to rest. The interpretation depended almost entirely on visual resemblance. There was no reported impact date, fire, debris field, metallic sample, eyewitness account, official recovery operation or change between satellite images demonstrating that an object had recently arrived. The supposed “trail” was interpreted as evidence of motion without first establishing that the feature and the lines were produced at the same time.
A more ordinary explanation fits the setting considerably better. Why Kiribati’s record is so sparse
Kiribati’s islands are dispersed across an enormous area of the central Pacific. That geography creates clear reporting problems. Region-level differences inside Kiribati
The limited reports do not support a statistical hotspot map, but Kiribati’s regions present different observing and verification conditions.
South Tarawa has the country’s greatest concentration of population, transport and government activity. More observers may be present, but artificial lighting, ordinary aircraft and local activity create more potential sources of misidentification.

Multiple forms of observation are especially important. The Tabiteuea observation deserves to remain open but low-confidence. The Starbuck Island crash story does not. More broadly, the lack of reports cannot establish that unusual lights are rare over Kiribati; it shows that sightings have not been collected in a transparent, systematic and readily searchable national archive.
