Introduction
That does not establish that Seychellois residents have seen only two puzzling things in the sky. It shows instead that the accessible record is fragmentary, dependent on overseas reporting platforms and poorly connected to local archives. On present evidence, Seychelles has unexplained witness stories, but no publicly substantiated national UFO case.

What has actually been reported?
The 1978 Victoria account
The earliest indexed report allegedly occurred at about 8 p.m. on 2 January 1978 in Victoria, Mahé. Four observers reportedly watched a group of bright greenish lights move down a valley below their block of flats. The witness described the lights as triangular or changing in formation, silent, slow-moving at first and apparently transparent because trees and ground lights remained visible beneath them. The formation then supposedly rose, contracted into a single point and accelerated out of sight.[National UFO Reporting Center]nuforc.orgLocation: Victoria, Mahe (Seychelles),, Seychelles… It made no sound, and moved slowly down the valley, then rose, shrank into a sing…
It is an arresting story, but its evidential value is limited by a crucial chronology problem: NUFORC records the report as having been submitted on 24 April 1999, more than two decades after the claimed event. No contemporary newspaper report, named corroborating witness, image, recording or official document accompanies the database entry. The other three observers are mentioned but do not provide separate statements. The published account is therefore one person’s retrospective description rather than four independently preserved testimonies.[National UFO Reporting Center]nuforc.orgLocation: Victoria, Mahe (Seychelles),, Seychelles… It made no sound, and moved slowly down the valley, then rose, shrank into a sing…
Several ordinary possibilities remain open. Green, flame-like or teardrop-shaped lights can occur in descriptions of meteors, fragmenting space debris, pyrotechnics and aircraft seen through haze or intervening cloud. Apparent rapid acceleration is particularly difficult to judge when an observer lacks reliable information about an object’s distance and size. Conversely, the reported slow movement through a valley and subsequent change of formation do not map neatly onto one obvious explanation. The responsible classification is therefore unresolved because of insufficient data, not confirmed as an exotic craft.
The 2020 Mahé lights
The second NUFORC entry occurred at about 7 p.m. on 21 March 2020. The witness described several lights travelling on different headings: initially two moving south to north, with others crossing west to east, south-west to north-east or apparently in opposing directions. The report was posted in May 2020.[National UFO Reporting Center]nuforc.orgNational UFO Reporting CenterNUFORC UFO Sighting 154304# NUFORC UFO Sighting 154304Occurred: 2020-03-21 19:00 Local… Location: Mahe (S…
This case is less suggestive of a single structured vehicle than of multiple point-like objects. Satellites, aircraft on separate routes, lanterns or several unrelated objects observed during the same period could produce such an impression. A satellite interpretation cannot simply be asserted without reconstructing the observation from an exact location, viewing direction, duration and orbital data. Yet the description contains no publicly available photographs, angular measurements, brightness estimates or tracking records that would distinguish unusual manoeuvring from ordinary objects following independent paths.
The date is significant because modern low-Earth-orbit satellite deployments were already changing the appearance of the night sky. Researchers have documented how recently launched Starlink groups, unusual illumination angles and specular reflections can prompt sincere UAP reports, including reports from professional pilots. Satellite brightness can also surge briefly when sunlight reflects from a spacecraft’s surfaces.[arXiv]arxiv.orgEnhancing Space Situational Awareness to Mitigate Risk: A Single-Case Study in the Misidentification of a Recently-Launched Starlink…
That does not prove that the Mahé lights were satellites. It means that satellite ephemerides would be among the first records required for a serious investigation. Without them, alongside air-traffic and weather information, the case remains a low-information light sighting.
Why the national record is so sparse
The two indexed reports are concentrated on Mahé, the country’s most populous island and the location of Victoria and Seychelles International Airport. No comparable NUFORC entries are indexed for Praslin, La Digue, Aldabra, Farquhar or the other outer islands.[National UFO Reporting Center]nuforc.orgNational UFO Reporting Center NUFORC Reports by Location27Serbia and Montenegro, 2. Seychelles, 2. Singapore, 31. Sint Maarten, 2. Slovak… 68 New UFO Images Added to Gallery · NUFORC Participa…
This geographical pattern should not be treated as evidence that anomalous phenomena occur only around Mahé. It is more plausibly shaped by population, internet access, English-language reporting and proximity to visible aviation activity. Outer-island observations may never reach international databases, while reports submitted under vague labels such as “Indian Ocean” may not be indexed under Seychelles.
There is also no readily identifiable Seychelles equivalent of the former British Ministry of Defence UFO desk or France’s dedicated national UAP archive. Seychelles aviation authorities investigate events that potentially involve aircraft safety: for example, the Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority sent investigators to retrieve suspected aircraft debris discovered at Farquhar in 2017. Malaysian investigators later determined that the material was not from the missing Boeing 777 operating flight MH370.[Seychelles Nation]nation.scOpen source on nation.sc.
That episode illustrates an important distinction. Authorities can investigate an initially unidentified object when it presents a concrete aviation or safety question, yet that does not create a public UFO archive. Searches of prominent declassified collections maintained by the CIA and the UK National Archives reveal extensive international UFO holdings, but no clearly documented Seychelles investigation comparable with their better-known national cases. The UK catalogue advises researchers to search across defence, air and foreign-office series, while cautioning that most historical reports concern lights, flashes and shapes that often prove explicable.[cia.gov]cia.govOpen source on cia.gov.
The absence of an easily found file is not proof that no relevant colonial, diplomatic, military or aviation correspondence exists. It means that no strong official Seychelles case has emerged from the accessible record.
Claims, explanations and evidence in Seychelles’ UFO record
The available material becomes clearer when separated by what it actually establishes.
Confirmed in the documentary sense
- NUFORC publishes two reports indexed to Seychelles, one for Victoria in 1978 and one for Mahé in 2020.[National UFO Reporting Center]nuforc.orgNational UFO Reporting Center NUFORC Reports by Location27Serbia and Montenegro, 2. Seychelles, 2. Singapore, 31. Sint Maarten, 2. Slovak… 68 New UFO Images Added to Gallery · NUFORC Participa…
- The 1978 narrative was submitted long after the alleged sighting and contains no publicly attached instrumental evidence.[National UFO Reporting Center]nuforc.orgLocation: Victoria, Mahe (Seychelles),, Seychelles… It made no sound, and moved slowly down the valley, then rose, shrank into a sing…
- The 2020 case describes multiple moving lights, not a clearly resolved solid craft.[National UFO Reporting Center]nuforc.orgNational UFO Reporting CenterNUFORC UFO Sighting 154304# NUFORC UFO Sighting 154304Occurred: 2020-03-21 19:00 Local… Location: Mahe (S…
Contested or unresolved
- Whether the 1978 lights represented one object, several objects, an atmospheric effect or a mistaken interpretation cannot be determined from the surviving narrative.
- Whether the 2020 lights behaved anomalously cannot be assessed without exact observing geometry and comparisons with satellite and aircraft tracks.
- Claims that either event involved extraterrestrial technology go beyond the evidence provided.
Unsupported or misleading
Some online databases use language implying that Seychelles UFO reports are numerous or increasing, while displaying no substantive historical case list. One commercial-style reporting page says reports have been received and are being added, but its visible Seychelles entry is essentially an announcement dated March 2025 rather than a documented incident. Such claims should not be counted as sightings until individual reports, dates and evidence are published.[usufocenter.com]usufocenter.comseychelles ufo sightingsseychelles ufo sightings
Likewise, reposting the 1978 NUFORC narrative on derivative UFO websites does not create independent corroboration. It multiplies copies of the same source.[Think About It Docs]thinkaboutitdocs.com1978 january ufo alien sightings1978 january ufo alien sightings
What could explain unusual Seychelles sightings?
Seychelles offers several conditions that can make ordinary objects appear unfamiliar. Clear ocean horizons provide long sightlines, but few distance cues. Tropical humidity and cloud layers can distort brightness, obscure navigation lights or create the impression that distant objects are moving locally. Aircraft approaching or departing Mahé can appear stationary when travelling nearly towards an observer, then seem to change direction as their angle shifts.
Satellites are increasingly important. A sequence of evenly spaced lights usually indicates a recently deployed satellite group, while isolated satellites may brighten, fade or appear only briefly as they enter or leave sunlight. Scientific reconstructions have shown that Starlink illumination can produce apparently unusual formations even for trained flight crews. Seychelles approved Starlink’s entry into its telecommunications market in February 2026, although visible satellites cross national skies regardless of where the service is licensed.[Seychelles Nation]nation.scSeychelles Nation Starlink cleared for takeoff in Seychelles -Seychelles NationSeychelles Nation Starlink cleared for takeoff in Seychelles -Seychelles Nation
Meteors and re-entering debris remain plausible for short-lived streaks, fragmentation or coloured fireballs. Drones, lanterns, fishing activity, military or maritime patrol aircraft and distant lightning can also generate reports, particularly over dark water. None should be adopted as a blanket explanation: each requires comparison with the reported time, direction, duration and appearance.
What would make a Seychelles case credible?
A high-quality report would need more than a striking description. It should preserve the exact date and time, observing location, direction and elevation, duration, weather, apparent motion and whether stars, buildings or islands were visible in the same image. Original files matter because their metadata and full-resolution frames may reveal camera movement, exposure artefacts or known objects omitted from compressed social-media copies.
The most useful investigation would then compare the account with:
- aircraft transponder and air-traffic-control information;
- satellite orbital predictions and recent launch records;
- meteor and space-debris data;
- local weather, lightning and cloud conditions;
- independent statements taken before witnesses discuss the event together;
- photographs from separated locations, allowing distance or altitude to be estimated.
Modern scientific UAP projects emphasise this kind of multimodal evidence: synchronised wide- and narrow-field cameras, triangulation, radar, radio measurements, acoustic sensors and environmental monitoring. Such methods are designed to separate genuine anomalies from optical artefacts and familiar aerial objects.[arXiv]arxiv.orgOpen source on arxiv.org.
The strongest conclusion supported by Seychelles’ UFO record
Seychelles does not currently have a well-supported national UFO chronology. Its public record is dominated by two Mahé witness submissions, neither of which can now be decisively confirmed or debunked. The 1978 Victoria story is the more dramatic, but its twenty-one-year reporting delay sharply weakens it. The 2020 observation is more contemporaneous, yet its multiple moving lights are compatible with several ordinary aerial or orbital sources.
The fairest conclusion is not that the reports are fabricated, nor that they demonstrate non-human craft. It is that both are unidentified at the level of the surviving information. In UFO research, that category often reflects missing evidence rather than extraordinary performance. For Seychelles, the central mystery is therefore as much archival as aerial: intriguing observations may have occurred, but no robust local reporting system has preserved enough information to turn them into testable national cases.
