Separate from the April interception are reports of unidentified aerial objects observed on 9 and 10 May 1980 near Mariano Melgar Air Base at La Joya. The more sensational narrative—that cannon fire had no effect on an object displaying capabilities beyond known aircraft—rests on a much narrower evidential foundation. Until operational records such as flight logs, radar data, communications recordings or original investigative files emerge, those dramatic claims cannot be verified independently.

For that reason, La Joya occupies an unusual place in Peru’s UFO history. It is neither a fully documented military mystery nor a case that can be dismissed as simple folklore. Instead, it represents an incident in which genuine military concern is well supported, while the most extraordinary elements remain inseparable from the missing documentary record.
