Introduction

At present, there is no well-documented, independently verified UFO case from Nauru that can be investigated using modern evidential standards. That makes the quality of any future report especially important. On a small island with limited historical documentation, a carefully recorded observation has far greater value than a vague recollection. The aim is not to prove that an unusual object was extraordinary, but to preserve enough reliable information for ordinary explanations—such as aircraft, satellites, meteors, atmospheric effects or camera artefacts—to be tested first.

Because Nauru covers only about 21 square kilometres, many observations may be visible from multiple districts. This creates an unusual opportunity: if several people independently record the same event from different locations, their observations can often be compared to estimate the object’s direction, altitude and possible trajectory far more accurately than would be possible from a single witness.

The minimum details every witness should record

The most useful sighting report is written immediately after the event, before memories change. Every report should include the following:

  • Exact date and local time, preferably to the nearest minute.
  • Observer location, ideally with GPS coordinates from a smartphone rather than simply “Nauru”.
  • Viewing direction, such as north-east over the ocean or inland towards Buada.
  • Estimated elevation above the horizon (for example, low on the horizon, halfway to overhead, or almost directly overhead).
  • Duration of the observation.
  • Appearance, including colour, brightness, shape and whether any flashing or steady lights were visible.
  • Movement, noting whether the object travelled steadily, accelerated, changed direction, remained stationary or disappeared suddenly.
  • Weather conditions, including cloud cover, rainfall, visibility and whether the Moon was visible.
  • Photographs or video, keeping the original files rather than edited versions.

Witnesses should also avoid discussing details with each other until each person has written an independent account. Separate accounts provide stronger evidence than a single shared narrative because investigators can compare where they agree and where they differ.

Why location and viewing direction matter on a small island

Nauru’s compact size changes how sightings should be analysed.

Unlike a large country where observers may be hundreds of kilometres apart, two witnesses in different Nauruan districts may have viewing positions separated by only a few kilometres. Even so, those differences can still help determine whether an object was:

  • close to the observer;
  • high above the island;
  • over the surrounding Pacific Ocean; or
  • extremely distant, such as a satellite or bright planet.

A report that merely states an object was “over Nauru” is therefore much less useful than one specifying:

  • where the observer stood;
  • which direction they faced;
  • how high the object appeared;
  • whether it moved relative to landmarks such as the coastline or airport.

Local landmarks—including the airport runway, phosphate pinnacles, the central plateau and distinctive coastal features—can provide fixed reference points that improve later reconstruction.

How to compare reports with flights and orbital data

Once the observation has been documented, the next step is to compare it against known aerial activity.

Commercial flight-tracking services use Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B), a system in which many aircraft broadcast their identity, position and altitude. Modern tracking combines ground receivers with satellite coverage, making verification possible even across remote oceanic regions such as those surrounding Nauru, although not every aircraft is visible and some military or government operations may be absent from public displays.[FlightAware]uk.flightaware.comFlight Aware ADS-B Flight TrackingADS-B Flight Tracking - FlightAware…

Useful comparisons include:

  • scheduled arrivals and departures at Nauru International Airport;[flightradar24.com]flightradar24.comNauru International Airport (INU/ANYN) METAR | Flightradar24Nauru International Airport (INU/ANYN) METAR | Flightradar24…
  • aircraft passing through regional Pacific air routes;
  • satellite passes;
  • visible planets;
  • known meteor activity;
  • announced rocket launches or atmospheric re-entries when applicable.

If a bright light matches the position, direction and timing of a tracked aircraft or satellite, that explanation should normally be preferred unless contradictory evidence exists.

Weather should be checked before drawing conclusions

Weather often explains unusual lights or changes in appearance.

Relevant conditions include:

  • cloud layers that hide or reveal aircraft lights;
  • high humidity producing halos;
  • rain showers;
  • haze reducing depth perception;
  • lightning beyond the horizon;
  • atmospheric refraction near the horizon.

Nauru’s airport participates in the international aviation weather network, and aviation weather observations are available for operational use even though some public services may not always display complete METAR data for the airport.[ICAO]icao.intWP14 AI.5 ICAO REVIEW OF THE APAC AIR NAVIGATION PLANMET SG/27–WP/14September 1, 2023…Published: September 1, 2023

Comparing the reported observation with local weather conditions helps distinguish unusual behaviour from optical effects caused by the atmosphere.

Recording photographs that remain useful

Images are most valuable when investigators can examine the original files.

Witnesses should:

  • retain the original photograph or video;
  • avoid filters or editing;
  • note the exact capture time;
  • photograph the same part of the sky again in daylight to identify reference objects;
  • record additional wide-angle images showing the surrounding landscape.

A blurred zoomed image with no surrounding context is usually less informative than a wider photograph showing the horizon, coastline and nearby landmarks.

If multiple witnesses photograph the same object from different positions, those images may allow estimates of distance and direction that a single image cannot provide.

Assessing the quality of a Nauruan sighting

Not every report carries the same evidential value. A practical assessment can distinguish between different levels of reliability.

High-quality reports generally include:

  • precise timing;
  • exact observer location;
  • multiple independent witnesses;
  • original photographs or video;
  • consistency with known weather information;
  • comparison against aircraft and satellite data.

Lower-quality reports often rely on:

  • uncertain dates;
  • approximate locations;
  • recollections made long afterwards;
  • heavily edited images;
  • missing information about direction or duration.

A report that remains unexplained after known aircraft, satellites, astronomical objects and weather conditions have been checked is not automatically evidence of an extraordinary phenomenon. It simply means that the available information is insufficient to identify the object with confidence.

Building a better national record

Because Nauru currently lacks a substantial verified archive of UFO reports, each carefully documented future observation could significantly improve the historical record. Even if most reports ultimately prove to involve aircraft, satellites or natural phenomena, systematic documentation would establish a reliable baseline against which any genuinely unusual future observation could be assessed.

That approach also complements broader research into Nauru’s reported sightings, official records and any future investigations. Rather than treating every unexplained light as mysterious—or dismissing every report outright—it provides a structured method for preserving evidence, testing ordinary explanations and identifying the small number of cases, if any, that genuinely remain unresolved.
