Namibia has a small but persistent record of unidentified flying object reports, concentrated mainly around the central and Atlantic coastal regions. Objects close to a camera—particularly insects, birds, dust or airborne debris—can appear extremely fast and oddly shaped because the viewer unconsciously assumes that they are far away. Why the coast produces so many reports
The prominence of Walvis Bay, Swakopmund and Usakos in Namibia’s surviving UFO record may look like a geographical pattern, but the reporting environment offers several ordinary reasons for it.

The 2009 Walvis Bay case under scrutiny
The October 2009 event deserves particular attention because it involved independent witnesses, port personnel and an organised rescue response. These features make it more credible as an observation than an isolated internet claim. They do not, however, make an extraordinary explanation more likely.
Several reported details favour a meteor or bolide, meaning an exceptionally bright meteor:
- a brilliant red or fiery light;
- a visible trail;
- an apparent explosion or fragmentation;
- a short event rather than prolonged hovering;
- an apparent path towards the horizon;
- no wreckage at the supposed impact point.

The reported “loud thud” does not prove a low-altitude crash.
