The difficulty is that the story does not end there. A natural meteor entering Earth’s atmosphere does not make controlled turns or circle over a city. Supporters of the meteor hypothesis therefore generally suggest that these reported manoeuvres arose from observational effects rather than actual flight behaviour.
Possible mechanisms include:
- Interrupted line of sight. The object disappeared behind Antananarivo’s hills, allowing observers to lose track of it and later mistake another light or afterglow for the same object.

Could it have been an aircraft?
An aircraft provides an obvious alternative because witnesses ultimately described what appeared to be an elongated metallic object rather than only a light.
However, the aircraft hypothesis faces several practical problems.
First, Campagnac was not an inexperienced observer. He was a professional pilot and Air France technical manager familiar with the appearance and performance of contemporary aircraft. Second, witnesses reportedly described behaviour inconsistent with conventional aircraft operating over Madagascar in 1954:

- a brilliant green luminous feature preceding the object;
- rapid changes in direction;
- an unusual combination of glowing and metallic structures.

Do atmospheric effects explain the remaining reports?
Some features attributed to the event could potentially result from atmospheric or perceptual phenomena rather than the object itself.
For example, reports of electrical failures are often repeated in dramatically expanded form. Likewise, reports of frightened animals are intriguing but difficult to interpret scientifically. Domestic animals can react to sudden bright light, unexpected movement or human alarm. Atmospheric conditions may also have influenced perception. Antananarivo’s elevated terrain, exceptionally clear winter skies and surrounding hills could all complicate estimates of distance, altitude and apparent speed.
Which reported features still resist easy explanation?
If Campagnac’s testimony is accepted substantially as reported, several elements remain awkward for straightforward conventional explanations.
They include:
- the apparent transition from a fireball-like light to a structured metallic object;
- the reported controlled manoeuvres;
- the claimed close-range observation by technically experienced witnesses;
- the alleged second observation roughly 150 kilometres away within minutes, which would imply extremely high speed if it involved the same object.
Each point, however, depends on testimony rather than independently preserved records.
