Introduction
Claims that unidentified flying objects have repeatedly appeared above the Krško Nuclear Power Plant occupy a prominent place in Slovenia’s modern UFO folklore. The best-known episodes centre on videos circulated in 2008 and 2013, both showing bright lights apparently hovering above or near the country’s only nuclear power station. Although these recordings have been widely shared on UFO websites and social media, they remain unverified. No publicly available evidence demonstrates that an unknown craft entered the plant’s protected airspace, triggered a security response, or was confirmed by radar or other independent sensors.
The Krško cases are therefore best understood as examples of how an ordinary-looking aerial light can acquire extraordinary significance because it is seen near sensitive infrastructure. The location attracts attention, but the available evidence does not presently support claims of an unexplained intrusion.
The 2008 and 2013 video claims
The earliest widely circulated Krško footage is usually dated to October 2008. According to descriptions accompanying the video, a worker or nearby resident filmed a luminous object close to the nuclear plant during the early morning. Some UFO websites expanded the story by claiming similar objects had been seen several times during mid-October and speculated about links to electrical disturbances elsewhere in Slovenia. The 2013 case gained even greater visibility after a YouTube video showed two elongated lights apparently hovering above the skyline near the plant. The anonymous uploader stated that he and a friend observed the lights at around 10 p.m. on 26 January 2013 while looking towards the Krško Nuclear Power Plant. Slovenian news outlets reported on the clip but were careful to note that the recording alone did not establish either the location or the nature of the object. Neither incident produced a documented chain of evidence beyond the video itself. Publicly available versions are heavily compressed internet uploads without the original camera files, metadata or witness interviews needed for rigorous forensic analysis.
Why a light can appear above the plant without being extraordinary
Nuclear power stations naturally become focal points for unusual interpretations because they are highly recognisable landmarks and already carry symbolic associations with secrecy, technology and security. A bright light seen in the direction of such a facility is therefore more likely to be interpreted as significant than the same light appearing over open countryside.
Several ordinary factors can also make lights appear unusual:
- Perspective compression. A distant aircraft or helicopter can appear stationary when moving almost directly towards or away from the observer.
- Atmospheric conditions. Moisture, haze and temperature inversions can magnify, distort or colour bright lights, particularly at night.
- Camera limitations. Consumer digital cameras and mobile phones often produce blooming, elongated shapes and colour changes when recording bright point sources in darkness.
- Unknown viewing geometry. Without precise observer location, compass direction, focal length and elevation, it is difficult to determine whether the object was actually above the plant or simply aligned with it from the camera’s perspective.
These limitations are especially relevant because the circulated Krško videos provide little contextual information beyond the claimed filming location.
The 2008 reactor incident and why it became linked to UFO stories
The October 2008 UFO narrative is often confused with a genuine operational event at Krško earlier that year.
In June 2008 the nuclear plant experienced a coolant-system leak that led operators to declare an “Unusual Event” under established safety procedures. The reactor was shut down in a controlled manner, the faulty valve was identified and replaced, and authorities repeatedly stated that there had been no danger to workers or the public and no release requiring protective action. Later UFO stories sometimes implied that sightings during October might explain power interruptions or unusual activity around the plant. What security and flight data would need to show
The available public evidence is insufficient to establish that an unidentified object entered restricted airspace around Krško. For such a claim to become persuasive, investigators would ideally require several independent lines of evidence, including:
- authenticated original video files with intact metadata;
- precise witness locations and viewing directions;
- air traffic control and aircraft transponder information ruling out conventional traffic;
- weather and astronomical data eliminating known celestial explanations;
- security logs from the nuclear facility showing that personnel detected or responded to an aerial intrusion;
- radar, optical or other sensor detections consistent with the reported object.
No publicly released package of this kind has accompanied either the 2008 or the 2013 claims.

How credible are the Krško UFO claims?
Taken together, the Krško reports fall into the category of contested media cases rather than confirmed unidentified aerial phenomena.
The strongest points in favour of the claims are straightforward:
- independent witnesses reported seeing unusual lights;
- videos do exist rather than relying solely on anecdotal testimony;
- the observations occurred near a strategically important location.
However, the weaknesses are substantial:
- no verified original recordings have been released;
- the exact filming positions cannot be independently confirmed;
- no publicly available radar or security records corroborate the sightings;
- no official investigation has concluded that an unidentified craft entered protected airspace;
- the videos are compatible with several conventional explanations involving distant aircraft, optical effects or imaging artefacts.
For these reasons, the Krško cases remain interesting examples of how ambiguous visual evidence can become amplified by context. Within Slovenia’s broader catalogue of UFO reports, they are notable because of their association with the country’s only nuclear power plant, not because they constitute verified evidence of an unexplained aerial intrusion.
