What Really Flew Over Saint Lucia?
Saint Lucia has a small but traceable record of reported unidentified flying objects, although the available evidence is fragmented and generally weak.

Introduction
The central finding is therefore not that Saint Lucia has experienced a sequence of compelling unexplained encounters, but that ordinary astronomical, aviation and spaceflight phenomena are often reported without enough information to identify them immediately. The island’s open sea horizons, mountainous terrain and views across the Lesser Antilles can make distant lights appear isolated, stationary or unusually mobile. When reports lack original photographs, exact bearings, timestamps and corroborating radar or weather data, “unidentified” describes an information gap, not evidence of an extraterrestrial origin.
What has actually been reported?
The surviving public record is too thin to support a detailed national chronology. Nevertheless, several reports illustrate the different kinds of claims associated with Saint Lucia.
Soufrière, February 2002
A visitor submitted a report to the United States-based National UFO Reporting Center, or NUFORC, describing several lights seen during a ten-day stay in Soufrière. The witness reported a white light moving up and down near Petit Piton, a red light passing rapidly, and a flashing white light appearing in roughly the same part of the sky between about 10 p.m. and 10.20 p.m. on successive nights. This is a genuine archived witness account, but it is not an investigated case. No original photographs, compass bearings, angular measurements, weather information or independent statements accompany the entry. The repeated appearance at approximately the same time and location is more consistent with a predictable astronomical object, aircraft route or satellite observation than with a craft manoeuvring locally. Apparent “dancing” is also common when bright point sources are viewed through unstable tropical air or against moving clouds.
The report is valuable mainly because it shows how easily separate observations can be grouped into one UFO narrative. A moving red light, a recurring flashing light and a bright object near a mountain need not share the same cause.
Castries, September 2012
A second NUFORC entry concerns a photograph taken at sunset in Castries on 30 September 2012. The photographer did not notice anything unusual at the time, but later believed that a triangular object appeared in the image. Photographic cases discovered only after an image is reviewed are especially difficult to assess. Birds, insects, aircraft, lens reflections, sensor artefacts and blurred foreground debris can all produce shapes that were invisible to the photographer at the moment of exposure. Without the original full-resolution file and its metadata, it is impossible to establish the object’s distance, size or even whether it was physically in the sky.
The label “triangle” therefore records the witness’s interpretation of an image, not a confirmed triangular aircraft.
The alleged 2020 fishermen’s encounter
A Caribbean lifestyle article published in 2025 claims that fishermen off Saint Lucia saw a silent triangular craft with a bluish glow in 2020 and recorded a video that subsequently went viral. This account should be treated as unverified. The article does not identify the fishermen, provide an exact date or location, link to the original recording, cite an aviation authority or show how the supposed absence of aircraft was established. Searches of accessible Saint Lucian news and official sources do not produce a contemporaneous report matching the story.
The claim is a useful example of how UFO folklore can acquire unsupported technical details. Statements such as “no aircraft were registered in the area” sound authoritative, but they are meaningless unless the source identifies the radar, flight-tracking or air-traffic record consulted. On the evidence presently available, the 2020 story belongs in the contested category rather than the national incident chronology.
The strongest case is also the clearest explanation
On the evening of 19 November 2024, people in Saint Lucia and elsewhere in the Eastern Caribbean recorded a large luminous object moving across the sky. This explanation fits several otherwise striking features of the Saint Lucian reports:
- A very wide viewing area: the object was seen from several islands rather than from one neighbourhood.
- A steady regional track: witnesses described movement along the Eastern Caribbean rather than erratic motion over Saint Lucia.
- An unusual illuminated shape: rocket exhaust at high altitude can remain sunlit after observers on the ground are in darkness.
- No ordinary aircraft appearance: a rocket plume can be much larger and more diffuse than the lights of an aeroplane.
- A short-lived spectacle: the object crossed the visible sky and disappeared as the vehicle moved away or entered shadow.
High-altitude rocket plumes are frequently mistaken for UFOs because expanding exhaust can resemble a glowing cloud, cone, spiral or “jellyfish”. The November 2024 episode is therefore the best-documented Saint Lucian UFO event in the available record, but it is also the one with the strongest conventional identification.
Why reports vary across the island
Saint Lucia’s geography affects what observers see and how they interpret it. The island is narrow, mountainous and surrounded by open ocean, with major population centres and viewing areas distributed along both coasts.
In the north, Cap Estate and Gros Islet provide broad views towards Martinique and the northern Lesser Antilles. Castries and the north-west coast lie beneath or near regular aviation activity associated with George F. L. Charles Airport. In the south, Vieux Fort is served by Hewanorra International Airport and has long sea horizons towards St Vincent and the Grenadines. Soufrière’s steep terrain, including the Pitons, can conceal and reveal distant lights as clouds or observers move.
These conditions can create several misleading impressions:
Apparent hovering. A distant aircraft flying towards an observer may show little sideways motion for several minutes.
Sudden disappearance. A light can pass behind a mountain ridge, enter cloud or turn so that its forward-facing lamps are no longer visible.
Erratic movement. Small eye movements make isolated stars appear to shift when there is no nearby reference point, an effect known as autokinesis.
Unusual brightness. Venus, Jupiter, aircraft landing lights and satellite reflections can appear exceptionally bright over a dark sea.
Multiple-island sightings. A rocket, meteor or high-altitude re-entry may be visible over hundreds of kilometres, causing separate local reports to describe the same event.

What official records do—and do not—show

Contested or unresolved reports
The 2002 Soufrière lights remain formally unidentified because the report contains insufficient data. The recurring timing and position, however, point towards ordinary astronomical or aviation explanations.
The 2012 Castries photograph is similarly unresolved at the level of identification, but its evidential value is low because the object was noticed only after the picture was taken and the original image has not been publicly analysed.

Explained or effectively debunked claims
The November 2024 regional “UFO” is convincingly explained by Starship Flight 6. The match in date, time, viewing region and appearance is far stronger than the extraterrestrial interpretation.
