Is Sao Vicente Really a UFO Hotspot?
Sao Vicente appears repeatedly in UFO material, but tourism, maritime traffic and camera use may explain the apparent concentration better than a true hotspot.

Introduction
So Vicente appears more often than any other Cape Verde island in publicly accessible UFO material, but the available evidence does not support the conclusion that it is a genuine UFO hotspot. A more convincing explanation is that So Vicenteespecially the port city of Mindelois one of the country’s most photographed, most internationally connected and most digitally visible places. More visitors, more cameras, broader views of the sky and sea, and greater online sharing naturally produce more reported sightings than quieter islands. The small number of published Cape Verde cases also means that even two or three reports can create the misleading impression of a geographical cluster.
The current evidence therefore points towards a reporting concentration rather than a concentration of unexplained aerial phenomena. Understanding why So Vicente dominates the record helps place Cape Verde’s UFO history in context and avoids drawing conclusions from a very small and uneven dataset.
Why So Vicente generates more reports
The best-known Cape Verde UFO reports repeatedly reference So Vicente, particularly the area around Mindelo. This includes the widely circulated 2011 video of unusual lights and later online discussions that reused the same footage or referred back to it. However, these reports were published primarily through UFO websites rather than official investigations, and none has been accompanied by publicly available radar data, calibrated imagery or an independent technical assessment.
Because Cape Verde has so few documented UFO reports overall, a handful of incidents centred on one island can easily distort perception. A country with only three or four well-known cases does not provide enough data to identify genuine geographical patterns. Statistically, the apparent concentration may simply reflect where reports happen to originate rather than where unusual events occur.
Another important factor is that online archives favour material that is easy to discover and share. Once So Vicente became associated with one or two notable reports, later websites often categorised new Cape Verde content under the same location, reinforcing the appearance of a hotspot even when the underlying evidence remained limited.[Skeptical Inquirer]skepticalinquirer.orgOpen source on skepticalinquirer.org.
Tourism, shipping and open-sky visibility
Several characteristics of So Vicente make it more likely that unusual-looking aerial events will be noticed and photographed.
Mindelo is one of Cape Verde’s principal ports and a major stop for cruise ships and yachts crossing the Atlantic. Commercial shipping, fishing vessels, visiting aircraft and recreational boating all increase the number of observers looking towards the horizon, especially at dawn, dusk and night. The island is also an important transport hub linking Santo Anto with the rest of the archipelago.[Wikipedia]WikipediaCape VerdeCape Verde
Tourism adds another layer. Visitors routinely photograph sunsets, coastlines and harbour views, producing thousands of images in which unexpected reflections, birds, insects, distant aircraft or atmospheric effects may later be noticed. Unlike an object observed directly by multiple witnesses, many claimed UFO photographs are only discovered after people review their holiday pictures. This increases the number of reported anomalies without necessarily increasing the number of genuinely unusual events.
The island’s geography also contributes. Coastal viewpoints provide wide, unobstructed horizons over the Atlantic, making distant aircraft lights, ships, bright planets, satellites and atmospheric phenomena especially conspicuous. Clear skies are excellent for astronomy but also make ordinary aerial objects easier to noticeand occasionally easier to misinterpret when their distance and size cannot be judged accurately.
Why publicity matters as much as observation
Reporting is not evenly distributed across Cape Verde.(#endnote-1 “Endnote 1”)[Wikipedia]WikipediaCape VerdeCape Verde
Mindelo has comparatively strong international visibility through tourism, cruise traffic and cultural events. Visitors are more likely than local residents to upload photographs to international websites, post videos on social media or contact UFO-themed platforms. A sighting from a remote settlement on another island may never leave local conversation, whereas an identical observation by an overseas tourist can quickly circulate online.
This is a classic example of reporting bias. Researchers studying unusual aerial reports have long noted that the number of published cases depends not only on what people see but also on whether they have cameras, internet access, an audience willing to publish their account and an interest in reporting it. UFO investigators and scientific commentators consistently warn that publication patterns should not be mistaken for the underlying distribution of unexplained phenomena.[Skeptical Inquirer]skepticalinquirer.orgOpen source on skepticalinquirer.org.
Why missing reports from other islands prove little
The relative absence of reports from islands such as Brava, Maio or So Nicolau should not be interpreted as evidence that nothing unusual has ever been observed there.
Several alternative explanations are at least as plausible:
- Smaller populations generate fewer eyewitnesses.
- Lower tourist numbers produce fewer photographs and videos.
- Local observations may never be submitted to international UFO databases.
- Many ordinary aerial events are recognised immediately and therefore never reported as unidentified.
This is especially important in Cape Verde because the national sample is extremely small. When only a handful of reports exist across the entire country, random variation and differences in reporting behaviour become much more significant than they would in countries with thousands of documented observations.
Does So Vicente qualify as a genuine UFO hotspot?
Based on the publicly available evidence, the answer is no.
A genuine hotspot would normally be expected to show repeated, independently documented incidents supported by multiple witnesses, consistent descriptions, official records or technical evidence collected over time. So Vicente does not meet those criteria. Instead, the available material consists mainly of isolated online reports, amateur photographs and videos with limited supporting documentation.
The stronger explanation is that So Vicente dominates Cape Verde’s UFO record because it dominates many of the conditions that produce reports: international visitors, extensive photography, busy maritime activity, clear views of the sky and greater online visibility. These factors increase the likelihood that ambiguous aerial events will be recorded and shared without demonstrating that the island experiences more genuinely unexplained phenomena than the rest of the archipelago.[Skeptical Inquirer]skepticalinquirer.orgOpen source on skepticalinquirer.org.
