Iraq has generated a disproportionate number of well-known UFO, or more accurately unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP), reports not because it is uniquely prone to extraordinary aerial events, but because decades of conflict created one of the world’s most heavily monitored airspaces. How military surveillance creates more detections
War zones produce far more aerial observations than ordinary civilian airspace because almost everything that moves overhead is monitored.
During coalition operations in Iraq, surveillance included:
- Persistent infrared cameras mounted on aerostats overlooking military bases.
- Long-endurance reconnaissance aircraft.
- Armed and unarmed drones operating at multiple altitudes.
- Airborne early-warning aircraft and ground radar.
- Electro-optical cameras capable of tracking very small moving objects.

Unlike civilian observers who might glance briefly at an unusual light, military operators often tracked unknown objects continuously for several minutes. This generated recordings that survived for later review but did not necessarily provide enough information to determine distance, size or identity.
Ironically, better surveillance often produces more unidentified observations rather than fewer. Detecting an object is easier than identifying it, particularly when only a single sensor is available. Iraqi skies are unusually crowded
Conflict transformed Iraqi airspace into an unusually complex operating environment.
Military surveillance systems routinely observed:
- Coalition aircraft operating at several altitude bands.
- Iraqi military aviation.
- Intelligence drones.
- Commercial aircraft following international corridors.
- Weather balloons.
- Surveillance balloons tethered above military installations.
- Civilian helicopters.
- Birds.
- Wind-blown debris.
- Atmospheric phenomena including dust layers and heat distortion.
Every unknown object initially had to be treated as a possible threat rather than merely an interesting observation. A small drone, for example, could represent hostile reconnaissance or carry explosives. The result was a larger archive of ambiguous recordings than would normally exist in peacetime.
Infrared cameras often look stranger than reality
Many famous Iraqi UAP videos were recorded with infrared rather than conventional daylight cameras.
Infrared imagery measures thermal radiation instead of visible colour. As a consequence:
- Objects may appear as dark silhouettes or bright blobs.

- Heat reflections can exaggerate or suppress visible features.

The ordinary objects sharing Iraqi airspace
Many objects reported as UFOs in Iraq have entirely conventional origins once sufficient information becomes available.
Common sources of confusion include:
Balloons
Military installations frequently encounter weather balloons, surveillance balloons and loose commercial balloons. Their slow drift, changing orientation and irregular appearance can produce unusual infrared imagery.
Small drones
Since the mid-2010s, commercially available quadcopters became common throughout Iraq. Their size, variable lighting and rapid manoeuvres can complicate identification, particularly at long range.
Birds
Birds passing close to a camera lens may appear disproportionately large, while distant birds can resemble metallic spheres or fast-moving objects depending on lighting.
Dust and atmospheric effects
Iraq’s climate frequently produces haze, dust storms and strong thermal gradients. These conditions distort apparent motion and degrade image quality, especially over long distances.
Perspective
Without precise range data, operators often cannot determine whether an object is nearby and small or distant and much larger. This ambiguity affects estimates of speed, acceleration and altitude.
Why the Mosul orb remains debated
The “Mosul orb” demonstrates why some Iraqi cases remain unresolved without necessarily implying extraordinary technology.
The publicly available material consists primarily of a short clip and previously released still imagery reportedly captured by a US military surveillance aircraft over Mosul in 2016. The object appears roughly spherical and lacks obvious features that would permit straightforward identification. Supporters of anomalous interpretations argue that the available imagery has resisted conventional identification.
Sceptics reach a different conclusion: the available evidence is simply too incomplete to identify the object confidently. A distant balloon, bird, imaging artefact or another conventional object cannot be excluded because the necessary measurement data remain unavailable.
This distinction is important. An unresolved identification reflects missing information rather than confirmed evidence of something extraordinary.
Why conflict itself increases reporting
War changes not only the number of observations but also the incentives for reporting.
Military personnel are trained to report anything potentially relevant to force protection, including:
- Unknown aircraft.
- Possible drones.
- Unexpected radar contacts.
- Objects approaching restricted airspace.
- Unusual infrared detections.
This creates a reporting culture fundamentally different from civilian environments. Many observations are logged precisely because operators cannot afford to dismiss a possible threat.
Consequently, Iraq generated more documented aerial anomalies than many peaceful countries despite having no evidence that genuinely anomalous objects occur there more frequently.
Why unidentified does not mean extraordinary
The term “unidentified” is often misunderstood.
An object may remain unidentified because investigators lack:
