According to the crew, the lights appeared unusually bright, seemed to change position and were not associated with aircraft shown on their onboard systems. Why weather radar may not detect distant lights
One aspect of the Jeddah–Abuja report that generated confusion was the crew’s observation that the lights were “not on radar.” That statement is often misunderstood.
Aircraft weather radar is designed primarily to detect precipitation, storm cells and, in some systems, terrain. It is not intended to detect satellites, stars or many distant non-weather light sources. Likewise, the Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) only displays aircraft carrying compatible transponders within operational range.
Consequently, the absence of a radar return does not itself indicate an anomalous object. A distant satellite, bright planet, meteor or astronomical light source would not normally appear on weather radar, while an aircraft without a cooperative transponder or one beyond the system’s effective range might also be absent.
For investigators, “not detected on radar” is therefore only one observation among many rather than evidence that an object possessed unusual capabilities.
Why apparent motion can fool even experienced crews
Night-time cockpit observations present several challenges that differ from viewing objects from the ground.
Over long flights departing Jeddah, especially westbound or southbound routes crossing sparsely populated regions, pilots often spend extended periods observing lights against dark skies with few visual reference points. Under these conditions:
- Bright objects near the horizon can appear to climb or descend because of the aircraft’s own motion.
- Relative movement between the aircraft and distant objects creates parallax, making stationary lights appear to drift.
- Atmospheric refraction near the horizon can distort apparent position.
- Autofocus and image stabilisation in handheld cameras may exaggerate perceived movement.
- Variations in satellite brightness can create the impression that one object has accelerated or changed direction.
These effects are well documented in aviation and astronomy and become especially noticeable during long cruise segments where observers continuously watch the same part of the sky.
Starlink flares and apparent motion near the horizon
The rapid expansion of the Starlink constellation has introduced a new category of aerial misidentification affecting both the public and professional aviators.
Recently launched Starlink satellites often travel in relatively close groupings before spreading into their operational orbits. During this phase they can produce intense, short-lived reflections of sunlight even when the ground below is in darkness. Depending on aircraft position, solar geometry and satellite orientation, several satellites may brighten and fade in succession, giving the impression of coordinated movement.
