What the national chronology actually contains

Once the Antananarivo event is set aside, only a handful of historical reports appear repeatedly in UFO literature.

A January 1955 article in the Malagasy newspaper Fandrosoam-Baovao referred to what it described as the third reported “flying saucer” over Madagascar. According to the report, an object had previously been seen near Fort-Dauphin (now Tôlanaro) in September 1954 before dawn, while another luminous object was observed over the Majunga (Mahajanga) and Mitsinjo region. Regional reports and recurring source problems

The few reports outside Antananarivo are spread across very different regions of Madagascar rather than concentrated in any recognised hotspot.

How fireballs can become UFO stories

Madagascar’s geography and clear seasonal skies provide favourable conditions for observing exceptionally bright meteors.

A brilliant fireball can:

  • appear intensely green or blue-green;
  • illuminate the surrounding landscape;
  • fragment or seem to change direction because of perspective;
  • disappear behind terrain before reappearing lower on the horizon;
  • produce delayed sonic booms;
  • remain visible for only a few seconds.

Modern science also demonstrates that spectacular meteor events are not rare over Madagascar.
