Introduction
The photographs taken during the 10 September 1990 Alfena sighting remain the most widely discussed UFO images ever produced in Portugal. Unlike many famous UFO photographs, the Alfena images were reportedly captured in daylight during an event observed by numerous independent witnesses across several locations near Porto. That combination gives the case unusual historical importance. At the same time, the photographs illustrate a fundamental principle of visual evidence: an authentic photograph of an unexplained object is not the same as proof of what that object actually was. That does not mean the photographs answer the central questions investigators would most like to resolve.
They cannot reliably establish:
- how far the object was from the camera;
- its true physical dimensions;
- whether it was stationary or moving slowly relative to the photographer;
- whether it emitted light or merely reflected sunlight;
- its mass or method of propulsion;
- whether it represented an unconventional craft, an unusual balloon or another airborne object.
These limitations arise because the images lack reliable geometric reference points. Without precisely measured foreground objects, calibrated camera data, stereo photography or independently verified range information, there is no dependable way to calculate the object’s actual scale. A small nearby object can produce much the same photographic appearance as a much larger distant one.
Similarly, the photographs do not reveal the object’s material composition. A metallic appearance in daylight may result from genuine reflective surfaces, lighting conditions or photographic exposure rather than indicating any particular construction.
This distinction is crucial. The photographs provide evidence that something was photographed, but they do not independently identify what that something was.
Authentication Claims, Missing Data and Rival Interpretations
One reason the Alfena photographs continue to attract attention is the repeated claim that they were examined by organisations including Kodak, NASA, the Portuguese National Laboratory of Engineering and Industrial Technology (later INETI, formerly LNETI), and other investigators. Even if those assessments are accepted, it is important to understand what photographic authentication actually means.
Authentication generally addresses questions such as:
- whether negatives show evidence of darkroom alteration;
- whether obvious compositing or retouching occurred;
- whether the photographed object existed in front of the camera when the shutter was released.
It does not determine:
- what the object was;
- whether it was ordinary or extraordinary;
- whether witness estimates of distance or behaviour were accurate.
This distinction is often lost in later retellings. Demonstrating that an object genuinely appeared in a photograph is fundamentally different from demonstrating that it could not have been a balloon, suspended object or other conventional aerial target.
The public record also contains important evidential gaps. Complete laboratory reports have not been widely published, and many secondary accounts repeat brief conclusions rather than providing the underlying technical analyses. Consequently, both sceptical and pro-UFO interpretations remain possible within the surviving evidence.
Supportive interpretations argue that:
- the large number of witnesses reduces the likelihood of an isolated photographic hoax;
- the object’s appearance differs from familiar aircraft;
- reported photographic examinations found no evidence of image manipulation.
More cautious interpretations note that:
- photographic authenticity does not identify the object;
- witness estimates of altitude and movement are inherently uncertain;
- unusual balloons or other airborne devices cannot be excluded solely from the photographs;
- incomplete documentation limits modern forensic reassessment.
Why Alfena Still Matters in Portugal’s UFO Record
Despite these uncertainties, Alfena remains the strongest photographic UFO case in Portugal because several independent forms of evidence survive together: multiple witnesses, contemporary media coverage and a set of original photographs that have remained central to discussion for decades.
