For many observers, the scene resembled classic UFO descriptions:

  • numerous glowing lights moving together;
  • sudden flashes;
  • objects apparently changing direction;
  • fragments appearing to “rain” from the sky.

Another major example occurred in June 2025 when the Royal Jordanian Air Force announced it had intercepted missiles and drones entering Jordanian airspace because military assessments indicated they posed a danger of falling into populated areas. Because fragments decelerate differently, some appear to stop while others continue moving, an illusion created by changing perspective rather than intelligent manoeuvring.

In November 2024, the Jordan Armed Forces announced that an unidentified flying object had fallen in a border area of Aqaba Governorate. The statement deliberately described it only as an “unidentified flying object” because its identity had not yet been established at the time of recovery. Why eyewitnesses often perceive UFO-like behaviour

Regional military activity combines several conditions known to produce misinterpretation.

Distance estimation is particularly difficult at night. A missile 80 kilometres away can appear close enough to touch, while a high-altitude interceptor may seem to stop in mid-air because its movement is mostly directed toward the observer.
