What Really Flies Unidentified Over Pakistan?
Pakistan has a small but persistent body of UFO reports, dominated by pilot observations, viral phone videos and unverified witness submissions rather than declassified case files or sustained scientific investigation.

Introduction
The central problem is not that every Pakistani sighting has been conclusively explained. It is that most reports lack the radar records, original high-resolution imagery, precise viewing geometry and independent sensor data needed to reach a firm conclusion. “Unidentified” therefore usually means that the available information is insufficient, not that an extraordinary craft has been established. Pakistan’s record is best understood as a fragmented aviation and public-reporting history in which a few interesting cases remain unresolved at the documentary level, while several prominent claims have plausible conventional explanations.
What Pakistan’s UFO record actually contains

The incidents that shaped public attention
The 2019 Karachi near-miss was probably a drone
On 18 January 2019, the crew of a PIA aircraft departing Karachi for Sukkur reported an object close to the aeroplane shortly after take-off. Contemporary reporting described it as hovering roughly 100 feet above the aircraft while the plane was at about 2,500 feet. The captain reportedly suspected a drone, and the sighting was passed to Karachi air-traffic control. This case matters because it is sometimes retrospectively added to lists of Pakistani “UFO encounters”. Technically, the object was unidentified at first, but the surrounding circumstances strongly favour an unauthorised unmanned aircraft: low altitude, proximity to an airport, a close observation by a flight crew and an immediate safety concern. Nothing publicly reported indicates exotic movement, unusual emissions or performance beyond known drone technology.
The incident also highlights a recurring confusion. “UFO” can describe any airborne object not yet identified, whereas popular culture treats the term as shorthand for an alien vehicle. The 2021 Rahim Yar Khan object remains inadequately documented

The video became unusually influential because it came from an airline cockpit and appeared clearer than many casual UFO clips. Yet its evidential value remains limited. Publicly circulated footage does not establish the object’s distance, dimensions, altitude or speed. A small nearby object and a much larger distant object can occupy the same apparent area in an image. Brightness and camera zoom can also turn balloons, aircraft reflections and atmospheric effects into apparently solid discs.
Some commentary proposed a weather balloon or a reflective balloon-like object. That explanation is plausible, especially in daylight, but it has not been demonstrated through a publicly released reconstruction matching weather data, balloon launches, radar information and the aircraft’s exact position. In January 2022, Islamabad resident Arslan Warraich filmed a dark object that reportedly remained visible for around two hours. The duration initially sounds impressive, but it weighs against some dramatic interpretations. A tethered object can remain in approximately the same area for hours, whereas an advanced vehicle hovering openly over Islamabad would be expected to generate independent observations, air-traffic information or security reporting. The video also lacks a dependable scale reference.
A detailed online discussion at Metabunk identified a large kite as a plausible explanation, noting the shape, motion and timing around the kite-flying season in neighbouring Rawalpindi. That assessment is not an official determination, but it fits the footage without requiring exceptional technology. Why geography changes the likely explanations
Pakistan’s reports cluster in heavily populated or aviation-connected areas: Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad–Rawalpindi, southern Punjab and routes linking major cities. That distribution may reflect where unusual aerial activity occurs, but it more obviously reflects where people, cameras, airports and commercial flights are concentrated.
Different regions also produce different identification problems:
Karachi and major airports. Dense air traffic, drones, birds, balloons and coastal haze complicate visual judgement. A low-altitude unknown near an airport should first be assessed as an aviation-security problem.
Punjab’s inter-city flight corridors. Pilot sightings can involve reflections, distant aircraft, balloons or astronomical objects viewed through changing layers of haze. The flat landscape offers long sightlines but few visual cues for estimating distance.
Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Kites, tethered objects, security aircraft and drones provide several plausible sources of apparently hovering shapes. Hills and variable cloud layers can further distort apparent motion.
Western border regions. Military surveillance, drones and restricted operations make reports especially difficult to verify. Claims involving the Afghanistan–Pakistan frontier may also be based on foreign military sensors rather than Pakistani witnesses or records.
A thermal video released publicly in 2025 was said by journalist Jeremy Corbell to show a disc-shaped UAP filmed by the US military near the Afghanistan–Pakistan border on 23 November 2020. Reports repeated claims that the object changed direction and lacked an obvious heat signature. However, the full sensor data, chain of custody, range calculations and official analytical record were not made public alongside the clip. Official records are the largest missing piece

Media reports confirm that observations were reported; they do not show what authorities subsequently established.
Pakistan’s fragmented public record may arise from several factors. Aviation authorities focus on safety rather than public UFO cataloguing. Military radar information is sensitive. Older files may not be digitised or indexed under terms such as “UFO” or “UAP”. Reports suspected to involve drones may be handled as airspace violations, while lights judged insignificant may never progress beyond routine logs.
This absence produces two opposite errors. Enthusiasts may interpret missing files as evidence of concealment. How the strongest claims should be graded
A useful evidence scale separates the reality of an observation from claims about its cause.
Confirmed observation, probably conventional: The 2019 Karachi case involved a real report by an identifiable commercial crew and an immediate aviation response. Available details favour a drone.
Confirmed report, unresolved in public records: The 2021 Rahim Yar Khan event was acknowledged by PIA and supported by video, but the object’s physical characteristics cannot be established from the released material.
Recorded object, probably explained: The Islamabad footage documents something in the sky, but its long duration and appearance are compatible with a kite or tethered object.
Unverified witness material: NUFORC and social-media accounts may be sincere, but most lack independent corroboration and cannot support strong conclusions.
Contested regional military claim: The 2020 border video may be authentic sensor footage, yet extraordinary descriptions of its size or manoeuvring depend on information that has not been independently released.
This distinction matters because unresolved cases are often treated as a single mysterious category. In reality, a case may remain open simply because nobody recorded the necessary measurements. The strongest conclusion supported by Pakistan’s UFO record
Pakistan has genuine reports of unidentified objects, including observations by professional pilots, but no publicly demonstrated case establishes technology beyond known human or natural causes. Its most famous events range from a likely drone and a probable kite to a cockpit video that remains unresolved because the necessary measurements were never released.
The enduring mystery is therefore institutional as much as aerial. Pakistan lacks an accessible, systematic archive that would allow researchers to compare incidents across time, regions and sensor types. Until original records are preserved and analysed transparently, the national UFO story will continue to be shaped by isolated news reports and compressed videos. Some objects will remain unidentified, but that status alone cannot bear the weight of claims about extraterrestrial visitors.
