Introduction

The Wonsan–Sunchon incident of 29 January 1952 remains the strongest documented UFO case associated with North Korea because it rests on genuine wartime military reports rather than later folklore. Two separate United States Air Force B-29 bomber crews reported remarkably similar glowing orange objects over different parts of North Korea within roughly half an hour of each other. At the same time, the available evidence has significant limitations. No photographs, radar confirmations or recovered physical evidence survive, leaving investigators to assess eyewitness testimony recorded during combat operations.

What happened over Wonsan and Sunchon?

The incident occurred during the Korean War while B-29 Superfortress bombers were returning from bombing missions over North Korea.

Near Wonsan at approximately 23:00 local time, three crew members aboard one bomber—the tail gunner, left gunner and top gunner—reported a bright orange object approaching from behind the aircraft’s left rear quarter. According to their reports, the object flew on a nearly parallel course for about five minutes before fading away into the distance. Roughly 24 minutes later, a different B-29 operating near Sunchon reported an apparently similar object. Two crew members observed an orange luminous sphere that paralleled their aircraft for about one minute before disappearing. The geographical separation between the two aircraft has made the case notable in UFO literature. Rather than involving a single crew under identical viewing conditions, it consisted of two independent reports from different bomber squadrons operating over separate parts of North Korea during the same night.

Although later retellings often describe spectacular manoeuvres or impossible accelerations, the contemporary documents are more restrained. The reports also acknowledge uncertainties. The observers could not reliably estimate the distance to the objects, meaning any estimate of their actual size is highly speculative. An object appearing only a few feet across nearby could equally have been much larger at a far greater distance.

Why investigators treated the reports seriously

Several factors distinguished these observations from routine wartime misidentifications.

First, the witnesses were experienced military aircrew accustomed to recognising searchlights, anti-aircraft fire, tracer ammunition, aircraft lights and atmospheric effects encountered during repeated combat missions. Third, the case received prompt official attention. Contemporary newspaper reports quoted Far East Air Forces commander Lieutenant General Otto Weyland as confirming that the sightings were being investigated while cautioning that the available information might never permit a definite explanation. Bright planets, stars or atmospheric refraction can produce striking visual effects, especially at night. Witness error

Combat operations involve fatigue, darkness, stress and rapidly changing visual conditions, all of which can affect perception. However, they do not by themselves explain why two separate crews reported broadly similar luminous objects within the same operational period. The enduring lesson is less that an unknown craft was demonstrated than that a small number of well-documented wartime observations can remain genuinely unexplained when the available evidence is too limited to support either a conventional identification or an extraordinary conclusion.
