Introduction
The luminous object seen over Khartoum in the early hours of 8 January 2018 is by far Sudan’s best-known modern UFO incident. What witnesses saw over Khartoum
Shortly after 3:00 am local time on 8 January 2018, residents of Khartoum and surrounding areas reported an unusual luminous object crossing the sky. Photographs showed a bright central point enveloped by an expanding greenish or bluish spiral or cloud. The object appeared much larger than a normal satellite and remained visible long enough for numerous observers to photograph it.

Dutch satellite tracker Dr Marco Langbroek received photographs from Peter Horstink, a Boeing 747 pilot flying near Khartoum during the event. Because the pilot could provide both an accurate location and a reliable observation time, the images became especially valuable for reconstructing what had happened. Why the Falcon 9 explanation fits so well
The leading explanation is not that witnesses observed the secret Zuma satellite itself but that they saw activity from the Falcon 9 second stage after completing its primary mission.
Rocket upper stages commonly perform manoeuvres after payload deployment. These may include:
- engine burns to lower the orbit;
- venting unused propellant;
- depressurisation before atmospheric re-entry.
When expelled into the near-vacuum of space, propellant expands into an enormous cloud. At high altitude this cloud can still be illuminated by sunlight even while observers below remain in darkness. The result can be a spectacular glowing spiral or expanding halo that appears enormous from the ground.
The Khartoum photographs display several characteristics expected from such events:
- a bright central source surrounded by a diffuse expanding cloud;
- symmetrical spiral structure produced by vehicle rotation during venting;
- gradual expansion rather than abrupt disappearance;

The Zuma mission and why it caused confusion
The classified nature of Zuma contributed significantly to the mystery.
Because the mission involved a secret United States government payload, little official information was released regarding its orbit or operational sequence. Soon after launch, reports emerged suggesting that the satellite may have failed to separate properly from the Falcon 9 upper stage. What evidence remains uncertain?
Although the overall explanation is strong, some details remain uncertain because of the classified mission.
Open questions include:
- the precise operational status of the Zuma payload after launch;
- exactly which upper-stage manoeuvre produced the visible cloud;
- whether the venting occurred immediately after a de-orbit burn or during depressurisation before re-entry.
These uncertainties concern the spacecraft’s operations rather than the identity of the luminous object itself. They do not substantially weaken the conclusion that the observed phenomenon was associated with the Falcon 9 upper stage.
What the Khartoum case shows about UFO investigations
The Khartoum incident illustrates the value of combining witness testimony with independent technical evidence.
Eyewitness accounts accurately established that something extraordinary was visible over Sudan. By themselves, however, they could not determine its origin. The decisive evidence came from combining:
- accurately timed photographs;
- aircraft position data;
- orbital mechanics;
- launch schedules;
- predicted re-entry windows;
- comparison with previously documented rocket exhaust phenomena.
Unlike many historical UFO reports that remain unresolved because of limited evidence, the Khartoum case benefited from unusually favourable documentation and expert analysis.
